What is Stevia?

Stevia is a species of herbs found in the sunflower family. Its origins trace back to tropical and subtropical regions from South America and parts of Asia. Stevia Rebaudiana, the sweetest stevia species, has been harvested for centuries for its sugar-like taste. In the early 1970′s, Japan began cultivating stevia in an effort to reduce consumption of cyclamate and saccharin, known carcinogens. Stevia received approval by the FDA as a food additive in the United States in 2008 and has received GRAS (Generally Recognized as Safe) designation. At maturity, the shrub grows to about three feet tall.

Is Pyure Stevia safe for diabetics?

Stevia is widely used as a sweetener around the world and has no effect on either blood sugar levels or glucose response making it safe for diabetics.

Where is Pyure Grow and Harvest Stevia?

Over 95% of the stevia grown worldwide, is grown in China. Pyure sources stevia and erythritol from USDA Organic Certified and non-GMO Project Verified crops. Pyure routinely conducts audits via facility visits where suppliers, ingredients and protocols are examined. Pyure received SQF (Safe Quality Food) level 3 Certification, the highest possible designation to ensure safety, quality and ethical sourcing that you can trust.

All of Pyure’s retail products are manufactured and packaged in the United States.

How is Pyure Organic Stevia Processed?

Pyure Stevia leaves are harvested from USDA Organic Certified and Non-GMO Project Verified crops, dried and then steeped in water, similar to steeping of tea. The liquid is filtered and separated from the plant material, then the extract is purified and dried to obtain high purity stevia leaf extract.

Most of Pyure’s Organic Sweeteners are zero-glycemic, and recommended for diabetics! Namely:

We recommend that you consult your physician before making any changes to your diet.

What is Reb A?

There are hundreds of different compounds that make up the intense sweetness of stevia. Reb A, or Rebaudioside A is a steviol glycoside that Pyure consistently extracts to provide a sweetness that you can count on. Due to the intense sweetness of Reb A (250 to 350 times the sweetness of sugar), only a small amount is needed.

What Are The Percentages Of Organic Stevia in Pyure Sweeteners?

Due to the intense sweetness of Reb A (250 to 350 times the sweetness of sugar), only a small amount of stevia is needed. To combat the airborne nature of stevia extract, we blend Organic Stevia with other diabetic-friendly, low glycemic sweeteners like Organic Erythritol and Organic Agave Inulin Fiber. These ingredients when paired together balance out the bitter flavors associated with stevia, while making the product more user-friendly when substituting stevia for sugar in recipes.

Due to the proprietary nature of Pyure products, we unfortunately cannot disclose exact percentages. If you are looking for a product that is 100% stevia, we recommend Pyure Organic Stevia Extract.

Why is Pyure Blended With Other Ingredients?

Due to the intense sweetness of Reb A (250 to 350 times the sweetness of sugar), only a small amount of stevia is needed. To combat the airborne nature of stevia extract, we blend Organic Stevia with other diabetic-friendly, low glycemic sweeteners like Organic Erythritol and Organic Agave Inulin Fiber. These ingredients when paired together balance out the bitter flavors associated with stevia, while making the product more user-friendly when substituting stevia for sugar in recipes.

What is Organic Erythritol?

Pyure Organic Erythritol is a sugar-alcohol that is derived from Non-GMO corn through the process of fermentation. Organic Erythritol is non-nutritive (meaning it provides no nutritional benefits) and digests very quickly through the body, leaving little to no effects on blood sugar levels. Organic Erythritol is found naturally in many foods and beverages like grapes, pears, mushrooms, wine and yogurt.

Pyure was the first-to-market with USDA Certified Organic and Non-GMO Project Verified Erythritol. Pyure conducts DNA testing throughout the supply chain to verify that only non-GMO corn is used in the production of Pyure Organic Erythritol.

Does Organic Erythritol Cause Any Side Effects?

About 90 percent of erythritol is excreted unchanged in urine, while 10 percent is digested through the blood, resulting in little effects to blood sugar levels. Due to the body not being able to fully digest erythritol, sugar alcohols can have the potential to cause gassiness, bloating and digestive symptoms when consumed in excess. Organic Erythritol is the least likely of sugar alcohols to cause these reactions, however we do recommend that it be used in moderation and to consult a physician if you experience symptoms or side-effects.

If you are sensitive to sugar alcohols or corn, here are some Pyure products that do not contain Organic Erythritol:

What is Organic Agave Inulin Fiber?

Organic Agave Inulin Fiber is not to be confused with Agave Nectar, which has been associated with being high in fructose. Agave Inulin Fiber is a bi-product of the Blue Agave Cactus where the fibers are stripped from the inside of the plant, dried, and crushed into a powder. Inulin is a natural, soluble vegetable fiber which nourishes the good intestinal flora that support immune function and promotes digestive health.

What Is Pyure’s Natural Flavor?

Due to the competitive nature of the stevia market, we’re a little shy about our proprietary natural flavor’s formula. Pyure’s natural flavors are USDA Organic Compliant and do not include MSG, aspartame, sucralose, dextrose, saccharin, sugar, soy, animal excretions or bugs… (BUGS? Strange, we know, but yes, ‘bugs’ have been asked about in the past). Looking for an option that doesn’t include “Natural Flavor”? We offer our single ingredient stevia extract here: Pyure Organic Stevia Extract

Are Pyure’s Products Calorie-Free?

Yes, all of Pyure’s products are Calorie-Free.

Why Are Some Of Pyure Organic Sweeteners Carbohydrate Neutral?

Although some of our products say 2 grams of carbohydrates, Pyure’s Organic Granular Products are actually carbohydrate neutral. Pyure Organic Stevia Packets and All-Purpose Blend include an ingredient called Organic Erythritol, a non-nutritive sugar-alcohol. Erythritol is considered the easiest sugar-alcohol to digest because it is never fully absorbed into the blood, thus not increasing blood sugar levels. You can subtract the grams of Erythritol in the product from the grams of carbs, resulting in zero net carbs.

Are Pyure’s Products Vegetarian/Vegan Friendly?

Yes, all of Pyure’s products are vegetarian and vegan friendly as there are no animal products in the ingredients.

Does Stevia Feed Candida?

Stevia is zero glycemic and does not cause spikes in blood sugar like common table sugar. Table sugar has been linked to feeding Candida overgrowth, which makes stevia an excellent option for those looking for an alternative.

Is Stevia Safe For Pregnant Or Nursing Mothers And Safe For Kids?

The FDA considers stevia safe during pregnancy and has awarded Rebaudioside A, the sweetest component of the stevia leaf, GRAS Approval.

The World Health Organization (WHO) along with multiple global regulatory organizations have determined that high purity stevia extract is safe for consumption by the general population including children when used in moderation. Stevia has a low acute toxicity, with no reported allergic reactions.
